Introduction
More than three years after the release of the original Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung’s Flip series remains the world’s most successful foldable phone lineup. The Korean tech giant will release the Galaxy Z Flip 5 later this year, and it may bring the most significant upgrades to date.
Design
Samsung’s foldable Flip phone series already underwent a significant cover display upgrade with the release of the Z Flip 3, and the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 might take the concept of the cover display to a whole new level.
Early reports indicate that the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s cover display will be shaped almost like a square and cover most of the phone’s “lid.” A larger cover screen should give users easier access to more One UI features and increase the Z Flip 5’s usability when folded shut.
Samsung might continue using the same hinge design as before. The company is reportedly weighing the cost benefits of using the existing hinge design and reserving the more advanced teardrop hinge for the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
Specifications
Our sources tell us that Samsung will develop three storage variants for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, clocking in at 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.
Like the Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature faster UFS 4.0 storage. However, because Samsung doesn’t manufacture UFS 4.0 chips with a storage capacity of less than 256GB, the 128GB Galaxy Z Flip 5 model will use UFS 3.1.
Display
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 may have the largest cover display among all foldable flip phones. Specifications are not yet known, but it is said to have an almost square footprint. The panel could feature Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection.
Other reports also say that the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s foldable display may have a less noticeable crease down the middle. However, this may not be the case if Samsung decides to use the same hinge design as before.
Samsung may also sign an agreement with BOE and add the Chinese display maker to its foldable phone supply chain in anticipation of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5’s release this year.
Camera
Camera specifications for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 are unknown. Nevertheless, if the phone will have a larger external display that will cover almost the entire lid, it will be interesting to see how the camera system will accommodate this change.
The cover screen could have two small Infinity-O cutouts or one pill-shaped cutout to make room for the primary and wide-angle cameras. Or Samsung may relocate the cameras, even though it would certainly be a challenge.
Software and features
Samsung should release the Galaxy Z Flip 5 with a new version of One UI running out of the box. It may be One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13 or One UI 6.0 based on Android 14. Either way, the new software features the phone will supposedly introduce are unknown.
Availability and price
Chances are that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be announced in August-September 2023 alongside its larger sibling, the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
The 2023 flip phone from Samsung might be released for $999 and up, assuming the company doesn’t have to increase prices due to the larger cover screen and other alleged upgrades.
